Fred Whitton Classic

The Fred Whitton Classic
Two unforgettable days in the Lake District

The Fred Whitton Challenge is one of the most demanding and iconic cycling routes in the UK — a 180 km loop with over 3,000 metres of climbing across the Lake District’s most famous mountain passes.

Our Signature Classic transforms this legendary ride into a fully supported 2‑day experience — preserving the challenge whilst creating a more balanced and achievable format.  By splitting the route into two carefully designed stages, the ride builds naturally: a varied and engaging first day, followed by a more demanding second stage that brings together the most iconic climbs.

The route includes an overnight stay at 4* accommodation in Keswick, a picturesque and vibrant Lakeland market town set beneath the northern fells, offering the perfect combination of scenery, comfort and convenience.

We follow the full Fred Whitton route, including all major climbs. Where appropriate, we make small, carefully considered improvements — such as avoiding the busy A66 — to create a safer and more enjoyable ride without losing the essence of the challenge.

The result is a more immersive, better-balanced way to experience one of the UK’s greatest cycling routes.  This is a challenging ride — but our pacing, support and two-day format are designed to make it achievable for fit, regular cyclists.

Day 1 - The Northern Loop

Find your rhythm

Route: Grasmere → Keswick

Distance: 83km

Elevation: 1500m

Day 1 is all about rhythm, variety and building into the ride.

We begin at Grasmere, with a few km to ease into the ride before climbing over the Struggle and north alongside Ullswater and onto the quieter rides of the northern Lakes.

Approaching Keswick via a quieter valley route, the ride continues with a scenic loop around Derwent Water, providing a relaxed but memorable midpoint to the day.

From here, the climbing begins again — first over Honister Pass and then Newlands Pass, two of the most distinctive and rewarding climbs in the Lake District.

A flowing descent brings us back towards Keswick, where we finish the day.

Day 2 - The High Passes

Where the route reveals itself.

Route: Keswick → Grasmere

Distance: 98km

Elevation: 1800m

Day 2 is longer and more demanding, bringing together the defining challenges of the entire ride.

After a gentle rollout of Keswick to wake the legs up, we begin with a steady climb of Whinlatter Pass before heading west and gradually building towards the main event: Hardknott Pass.

Widely regarded as one of the toughest climbs in Britain the gradients reaching upto 30% demand concentration, control and determination.

There is little respite as the route continues straight onto Wrynose Pass, creating the most iconic back-to-back climb sequences in the UK.

Having crossed the high passes, the terrain softens slightly as we descend into Langdale Valley, where sweeping views and fast, flowing roads lead us back into Grasmere.

Ride Overview
  • Two days guided cycling with an overnight stay in Keswick.

  • Two consecutive days riding, with a longer and more demanding second stage.

  • Single start/finish location (Grasmere) - park once, ride two days.

  • Best suited to cyclists comfortable riding back-to-back days, who like climbing, and are looking for a balanced but challenging weekend experience.

What's Included?

The group size is limited to a maximum of eight riders which means everything can be taken care of and you can focus on the ride:

  • Expert leadership and on-road support with carefully managed pacing and regroup points throughout.

  • 1 night stay in 4* accommodation in Keswick and an optional stay in Ambleside the night before.

  • Breakfast

  • Luggage transfer between stages

  • Support vehicle throughout

  • Mechanical assistance and emergency backup

A note on the ride format

The Fred Whitton Classic is designed as a balanced two-day experience, with meaningful riding across both stages.

The ride builds naturally — with a varied first day and a longer, more challenging, second stage bringing together Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose into a single, iconic stage, usually finishing mid-afternoon.

For those looking for a shorter final day, our Signature Epic offers an alternative format with a longer first stage and a shorter second day finish.
